X-ray and spectroscopic characteristics of Er3+ ions in polycrystalline lithium tetraborate

The spectroscopic characteristics of Er3+ ions in polycrystalline Li2B4O7 matrix were studied. It is shown that all energy transitions are parity-forbidden intraconfigurational transitions between energy levels within 4f configuration. It is discovered that for most of the transitions there is violation of strict selection rules for total angular momentum (∆J > 1), and also for spin (∆S > 0) and orbital momentum (∆L > 1) in LS coupling approximation. This is caused by the internal field of the matrix having effect on Er3+ ions via non-centrosymmetric interaction, which leads to different parity states being mixed, resulting in removing the prohibition of parity and total orbital momentum selection rules. All identified maxima correspond to radiative transitions from the excited levels onto the ground level 4I15/2 of Er3+ ion
